Daniel Márquez

From Fudan´s towers to the Everest!

Hello, I’m Daniel, an educator and adventurer who has been fortunate enough to explore the depths of Chinese philosophy and culture at Fudan University. My journey began with a curiosity about China’s growing influence on the global stage, which led me to study in one of China’s top universities.

During my studies, I was captivated by the depth of Chinese culture and philosophy. I explored ancient thoughts and delved into areas like sociology and economics. This experience was more than academic; it was a cultural immersion that allowed me to see China through an objective lens and enjoy its true essence. One of the most rewarding aspects of my time in China was the chance to travel with classmates, experiencing the country’s diverse regions and landscapes. These travels have left me with unforgettable memories and a deeper understanding of China and its people.

As an international student, I faced challenges, including financial constraints due to missed scholarship opportunities. However, I managed to support myself through a teaching assistant position and part-time jobs, which eventually led to a career in education. After graduation, the pandemic made returning home difficult, so I transitioned to a working visa and started teaching Spanish in Beijing. This opportunity came about through persistence and a bit of luck, as I applied to numerous jobs and attended many interviews.

My first teaching job was in a remote village near Hebei, which was a stark contrast to my current life in Hangzhou. While village life was quiet and at times lonely, it offered financial freedom. Hangzhou, with its vibrant city life and proximity to Shanghai, has been a significant improvement and a better fit for my lifestyle. To future adventurers considering a move to China, I say: apply to everything. Prepare a concise CV and a brief introduction video, then send out applications widely. It’s about finding the job you need, not just the job you want.

Traveling is a crucial part of the experience. I’ve explored Yunnan, cycled to Putuo Shan, and hiked in Wutaishan. Each trip has been a testament to the region’s diversity and beauty. My most memorable adventure was reaching Everest Base Camp, a challenging trek that tested my endurance and patience but was ultimately rewarding.

For those hesitant to move abroad, my advice is to listen to your heart and take the leap. I came to China with fears about money, language, and safety, but these concerns were resolved along the way. Even if things go wrong, it’s an opportunity to learn and grow. Looking back, I would tell my younger self that the journey would be filled with surprises. The experience has been one of self-discovery and adventure, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
